Urban Design -
The planning of a city or town’s physical and social development begins with the design of its layout and the provisions of its current and future services and facilities.
Sherman Group has extensive experience providing municipalities Urban Design. Our initial planning and designs typically begin with the development of design guidelines associated with how the pedestrian, vehicular, existing and/or planned facilities and the natural environment interface. SGI projects of this nature include various downtown redevelopment projects, pedestrian circulation/pattern studies and environmental assessments.
Design projects within the public right-of-way are primarily focused on the development, and most recently the redevelopment or renewal, of places and spaces for people as pedestrians. Our various Streetscapes and Downtown Renovations projects emphasize pedestrian circulation within a level of safety, interface and comfort. A multitude of streetscape, landscape and pedestrian components become part of the initial design guidelines, planning, and pedestrian/vehicular circulation and connections, which ultimately provides a visualization of the overall environment and creates a level of identity, theme and sequence for the space.
On a smaller scale (yet equally as important as our downtown projects) is our work with community and neighborhood development and/or renovation. These projects quite often include various levels of pedestrian amenities and traffic calming elements for existing or historic businesses and residential areas.
